Animal Kneads Day is CMPD Animal Care & Control's (AC&C) largest annual fundraiser with all proceeds benefiting the Animal Care & Control Community Spay/Neuter Assistance Program. The event is hosted by the Great Harvest Bread Company and their owners Jeff and Janet Ganoung (own the Kings Drive and Rea Road locations) and has tripled in size since it first began in 2007.
On the day of the event the owners and staff donate their time and the ingredients to make over 1,000 loaves of bread. Volunteers from AC&C staff the counter and offer the bread to customers for a donation of $10 a loaf. 100 percent of the proceeds go directly to support the AC&C Spay/Neuter Community Assistance Program. The funding from this event is able to cover approximately 8 clinics a year which results in approximately over 500 animal sterilization surgeries.
In 2016, Animal Kneads Day raised $16,400! 10 vendors participated along with multiple businesses in the shopping center.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg is one of the top 10 fastest-growing US metro areas, and as the Charlotte area continues to grow, so does its animal population. There are an estimated 400,000 cats and dogs living in the metro area, and many of these animals are stray. As a municipal shelter, Animal Care & Control cannot turn away any animal, regardless of the shelter's capacity. Last year alone, due to pet overpopulation in the community, 13,157 dogs and cats entered the AC&C Shelter. To help reduce the number of animals coming into the shelter, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Animal Care & Control Division instituted a free public Spay & Neuter Community Assistance Program. This program is funded solely through donations and grants, which makes Animal Kneads Day our most important annual fundraiser.
